Monmouth County was established in 1683 and has 53 municipalities. Freehold Borough is the county seat. Raritan Bay forms its northern edge and the Atlantic its eastern one, and the Battle of Monmouth was fought here in June 1778, on ground now preserved as Monmouth Battlefield State Park.
