Essex Fells was laid out in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and it still feels that way: curving streets, wooded lots, and almost nothing but houses. Plenty of them are Tudors, colonials and stone houses with traditional detailing.
Updating light in a house like that is mostly about restraint. We choose decorative fixtures that suit the architecture, add recessed light only where it earns its place, and put things on dimmers. Dark paneled rooms get extra thought, because wood soaks up light.
Stone facades are a gift for outdoor lighting. We graze the stone from close in, light a couple of trees, and keep the drive and paths safe. The property shouldn’t glow from the street.

Essex Fells FAQ
How do you light a stone facade?
Fixtures set close to the base of the wall, aimed up, so the light skims across the stone and shows its texture.
Can you work with a home that has dark wood paneling?
Yes. Paneled rooms need more light than you’d think, and most of it should land on the walls rather than the floor.
Do you serve the Caldwells and North Caldwell?
Yes. We have a residence in our portfolio in North Caldwell.
