River Vale is a Pascack Valley township on Lake Tappan, known for its parks and golf courses. The houses are mostly colonials, split-levels and newer custom homes.
Split-levels are tricky. Half-flights of stairs, low ceilings in one wing, a dark family room. Many of these mid-century houses have been opened up or added onto, and the lighting has to tie the old layout to the new rooms.
Summer here happens out back. We light the patio, deck and pool so they’re safe and comfortable, then add a little light out front on the facade and walk.
