Lighting in Mountain Lakes, NJ

Mountain Lakes was built in the early 1900s as a planned community, and many of the original Arts & Crafts houses, the ones people call Hapgoods after the developer, are still here on the winding roads around the lakes.

These houses have dark woodwork, fireplaces and odd, lovely proportions. Bright white cans fight all of that. We keep the light warm and dimmable, pick fixtures that look like they belong to the period, and when a renovation needs recessed light, we put it where it won’t cut across the trim.

The lots are steep and rocky, with stone walls and water at the bottom. Steps and paths come first, for safety. Near the lake we keep things low and shielded so the water stays dark at night.

Mountain Lakes FAQ

Can you add modern lighting to an older Arts & Crafts home without the house losing its character?

Yes. Modern light can stay out of sight. We hide it in coves or tuck it at the edges, and let period-style fixtures be the things you see.

Our lot is steep. How do you approach outdoor lighting?

We start with every step and change in level, then add a few accents. A steep lot needs less decoration and more care.

Do you light waterfront areas?

Yes, but gently. Low path light to the dock and nothing aimed out over the lake.
